Drumming

Brahm Drumming

When I quit Tap Dancing 11 years ago, I needed a rhythmical outlet of expression. My cousin gave me the most beautiful gift of an African Djembe drum. From the moment my hand first hit that deep base, I was hooked. Although I am self-taught, the rhythms that pour out of me are that of a trained dancer, therefore, the rhythms are unique and complementary to other styles of drumming. After 6 years of performing in night clubs with DJs, I moved to Vancouver and joined a fantastic group called the Drum Café. Four years ago, I began a free drum circle in Stanley Park called Brahm’s Tams. Every Tuesday from 5pm until the sun sets. For more information, please go to Brahm’s Tams Page.

Dance

I began Tap at the age of 3, Jazz at 7 and Ballet at 11. By 18, I had graduated to the level of teacher in Tap and Jazz through C.D.T.A. Canadian Dance Teachers Association and grade 5 (the highest level) in Checcetti Ballet with Quinte Ballet School (ranked #3 in Canada). I then joined Gus Giordano Dance Company in Evanston, IL on full scholarship.

In 1994, I moved to New York City, where I had the honour of training under Gregory Hines and the most incredible choreographer I have known to this day, David Storey.

My dance experience led me to an interest in teaching and helping people. I returned to Canada and created a not-for-profit theatre company with several components. I created a program called Triple Threat Musical Theatre Program (still running to this day), which allowed students the opportunity to become a “Triple Threat”. It was mandatory for each student to take an acting class, singing class and dance class to become a well-rounded performer. Triple Threat also had a performance group of its best students, professional performers and teachers (including myself) of the T.T.M.T.P. This performance group performed at the International Jazz Festival, the Tulip Festival, the Museum of Nature, dinner theatres, etc. Triple Threat was a great experience and with a lot of hard work, I helped students develop their skills and the community benefitted from my ability to entertain. During this time, I wrote, produced and directed 12 plays/musicals.

Brahm Drumming

At 25, I came to the realization that not only could I teach when I was much older and wiser, but I didn’t really receive the chance to decide what profession I would have chosen if dance hadn’t been implanted in my life.

I stopped my professional career as a dancer and began to pursue other interests.

Yoga

After many years of a personal practice, I have decided to incorporate formalized training in Hatha Yoga as a complement to the rest of my training. By April 2012, I will be a certified Hatha Yoga teacher.
